Stars Irons And Powell Share Honours On High Seas

Jeremy Irons came in for the traditional champagne dousing as he and the rest of his crew celebrated second place in the latest leg of the BT Global Challenge yacht race.

After fighting the huge waves of the Tasman Sea, being drenched in something other than seawater was bound to have been refreshing.

Brideshead Revisted star Irons' LG Flatron yacht - which leads the overall standings - was only pipped at the post by BP Explorer by just 25 seconds after a frantic dash to the finish.

But it came in ahead of fellow celebrity crewman Robert Powell's third-placed Logica boat.

Irons, an experienced yachtsman, and Powell, who had never set foot on a boat until two months ago, were on board for just one leg of the 30,000 mile odyssey - the 1,230 miles from Wellington in New Zealand to Sydney, Australia.

But Powell's wife Babs has signed on for the full circumnavigation, aboard Veritas.
