British actor Jeremy Irons will visit the Capital next month, before sailing from Wellington to Sydney on the fourth leg of the BT Global Challenge.

Irons is best known for his roles in Brideshead Revisited and the 1997 film of the controversial Nabokov classic Lolita.

He will sail with the yacht LG Flatron - due to leave Wellington with the other 11 yachts in the global race on February 18.

Irons, 52, said in a statement released today that he was delighted to be joining the leading yacht for the next leg.

"I was brought up sailing, so it is in my blood and this opportunity has to be one of the ultimate sailing challenges.

"I am terrified and exhilarated by the idea of the experience and hope that LG Flatron, in spite of my crewing, is the first to see the welcoming sight of Sydney Harbour in all its glory."

A spokeswoman said Irons was likely to be in Wellington a week before the race restarted, as required of all crew members.
