Franco Zeffirelli is preparing for an April start on "Callas Forever," his drama about the last days of opera diva Maria Callas.

Martin Sherman and Zeffirelli scripted from an original story by the director, who was a close friend of the legendary singer and directed her on stage in several productions.

Stratas to star

Greek opera star Teresa Stratas, who teamed with Zeffirelli in his 1982 film version of "La Traviata," will play the title role. Jeremy Irons is in advanced negotiations to co-star as a Faustian impresario who convinces Callas to make an ill-fated comeback.

Rome-based Cattleya is producing for Medusa Film and shooting is scheduled for Paris and Spain.
