FILM idol Jeremy Irons comforted badly injured Hollywood star Lauren Hutton yesterday after she crashed on a powerful motorcycle.

Irons held the actress in his arms then flew with her in a helicopter to hospital after she careered off the road and smashed into a giant boulder.

Irons and Hutton are both members of the Guggenheim Motorcycle Club in the US. They were with a crowd of other bike lovers, including film star Dennis Hopper, when the 55-year-old lost control of her machine.

The accident happened in a remote area of southern Nevada. Hutton and Irons - who was not hurt in the accident - were flown to a hospital in Las Vegas.

A member of the medical rescue team said: "Jeremy did everything possible to comfort her. He kept telling her she'd pull through and he'd stay with her."

Irons said later: "I am very upset. What has happened is dreadful."

Hutton starred in 50 movies, including American Gigolo with Richard Gere.

Her condition was described last night as "serious but stable".
