CANNES --- Sony-based Ray Stark's Rastar Prods. is going indie: In partnership with George Lascu and Cindy Kuipers and their Rex Films, the company will produce "The Night of the Iguana," based on the Tennessee Williams play.

Jeremy Irons has committed to star in "Iguana," with Kirk Douglas and Thora Birch in negotiations to co-star.

"Night" is budgeted at $10 million and slated for a late summer start date. A consortium of European banks will finance; Kuipers and Lascu arranged the package. Lascu is selling the pic at Cannes.

Don Safran and Rastar prexy Marykay Powell will serve as producers. Lascu will exec produce, with Kuipers co-producing.

Rastar Prods. negotiated a deal to take the rights from Warner Bros. and the Williams estate. Les Bohem penned the script, adapting from the play and the 1964 John Huston film.

The work centers on a group of disparate tourists in Mexico all searching for personal redemption.
