The ancient walls of St. James' Palace, overlooking London's distinguished Pall Mall, last week witnessed a gathering of glitterati more often seen at the West End's top nightspots.

The occasion, hosted by the Prince of Wales in the palace's state apartments, was a special presentation held in aid of the London Bach Society. The programme, entitled "Bach and China," was devised to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the composer's death by the society's president, David Tang OBE, founder of the exclusive China Club and Shanghai Tang fashion emporium in Hong Kong.

Narrated by Jeremy Irons, "Bach and China" included performances by pianist Melvyn Tan, violinist Vanessa Mae and Professor C.Y. Tse, world expert in playing the quin, an ancient Chinese instrument.
