TO CELEBRATE his 70th birthday, which actually falls in March, American maestro Lorin Maazel will be conducting the London Symphony Orchestra at a gala evening at the Barbican in aid of the Sargent Cancer Care for Children.

For the occasion, on February 17, Lorin has especially written The Empty Pot for a children's choir and orchestra, with Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons narrating the piece. This will be followed by Mstislav Rostropovich playing the Dvorak Cello Concerto and conclude with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 4, followed by a gala dinner.

The charity, founded in memory of the legendary conductor, Sir Malcolm Sargent, who died of cancer in 1967, funds a team of 50 specialist care workers throughout the United Kingdom offering practical and emotional support to children with cancer.
